Description
Yohannes Samuel set out on an ambitious trip in 2010 to rediscover the ancient source trees of the well-known Gesha coffee, which were concealed in the rough terrain of the Gorigesha mountain forest. The untouched beauty of the surroundings, as well as the grandeur of the mountain forest, made a lasting impression on him. This journey generated a desire to protect the precious place by nurturing the forest’s indigenous coffee tree. In 2017, Yohannes acquired 600 hectares of virgin property in the Gorigesha mountain forest. Prior this, he had successfully grown Gesha coffee on a nearby property. During this time, Yohannes developed a trusting relationship with the chiefs of the nearby tribe, known as the “Minit tribe”.
After acquiring the land and receiving tribal leaders’ blessings, Yohannes and his crew began cultivating 180 hectares of the virgin Gorigesha forest with the native Gesha coffee varietal known as Gori Gesha. This coffee variety is rare and only found in the Gorigesha forest. The forest’s lush ecology allowed chemical and fertilizer free farming practices, preserving the forest’s natural habitat. By the end of 2018, they had planted more than 1 million Gesha trees on 475 hectares of Gorigesha mountain forest, producing the original highland Gesha variety and established the Gorigesha Mountain Coffee Plantation.
