Description

Region & Story
The Sidamo region of southern Ethiopia is one of the country’s oldest and most well-known coffee-growing areas, often considered part of the birthplace of coffee itself. Coffee here is grown by smallholder farmers, typically on small garden plots surrounding their homes, where it has been cultivated for generations. The landscape is lush and elevated, with a strong connection between community, land, and tradition. For many producers, coffee is not just an export crop but a daily ritual, deeply woven into cultural practices. Sidamo’s long history and diversity have made it a foundation of Ethiopian coffee identity, offering a wide range of expressions depending on microclimate and processing.

What Makes It Special
Sidamo’s character comes from its high elevations, fertile soil, and abundance of indigenous heirloom varieties. These conditions create coffees with vibrant acidity, natural sweetness, and layered aromatics. Washed Sidamo coffees often highlight floral notes like jasmine with bright citrus and tea-like clarity, while natural-processed lots bring out deeper fruit tones—berries, stone fruit, and a fuller body. The balance between structure and complexity makes Sidamo both expressive and versatile, whether brewed as a delicate pour-over or a more textured espresso. It’s this combination of heritage, diversity, and cup clarity that continues to make Sidamo one of the most recognizable and respected coffee origins in the world.
